Behind Dosly: Built with Love, Engineered for Reliability
The story of an independent developer, a personal need, and the technology behind a medication reminder app designed to make a difference.
It Started with Someone I Love
Dosly wasn't born from a business plan or a market opportunity.
It started with my girlfriend.
She takes essential medication every single day. Medication that she simply cannot afford to forget.
Watching how important her daily routine was made me realize something: a medication reminder shouldn't just be another notification on your phone. It should be something you can genuinely depend on.
I explored existing solutions, but none offered the combination of reliability, simplicity, flexibility, and peace of mind I was looking for.
So I decided to build my own.
I'm an independent developer, and I've designed, developed, and engineered Dosly entirely by myself.
What started as something deeply personal has grown into a complete medication management platform, designed to help individuals and families feel more confident about their daily care.
More Than Just a Reminder
Most people see a medication reminder as something simple: schedule a notification, receive an alert, and mark a dose as taken.
But what happens when you haven't opened the app for weeks?
What happens when you're offline?
What if you use multiple devices?
What if someone you love needs help managing their medications?
These were some of the questions that shaped Dosly's architecture from the beginning.
I wanted to build a system that works with people's lives, rather than requiring people to constantly think about the system.
Two Layers of Notifications, One Goal
One of the most important engineering decisions behind Dosly was creating a notification system that combines local scheduling with server-side infrastructure.
Local-first reminders
Dosly schedules medication notifications directly on the device, allowing reminders to continue working without an internet connection.
This means users don't need a constant connection to receive their already scheduled medication alerts.
Server-side continuity
Mobile operating systems impose practical limits on how far ahead applications can schedule local notifications.
Rather than relying exclusively on that limited window, Dosly uses a complementary backend notification system.
When the local scheduling coverage expires, the server can continue delivering medication reminders through push notifications, even if the user hasn't opened the app for an extended period.
The result is a layered reminder architecture designed to reduce dependence on how frequently someone opens Dosly.
Of course, push delivery still depends on network connectivity, device settings, and operating-system behavior. The goal is to provide multiple layers of reliability rather than promise that technology can never fail.
Real-Time Synchronization Across Devices
Medication management becomes more complicated when multiple devices are involved.
Imagine marking a dose as taken on your iPhone while another device still believes the dose is pending.
Without proper synchronization, the same medication could appear twice, the dose could be recorded more than once, or unnecessary reminders could continue arriving.
Dosly is designed to address these situations through real-time synchronization.
Changes to medication routines and dose states are coordinated across devices, helping keep information consistent and reducing the risk of duplicate records or redundant alerts.
The principle is simple: your devices should work together, not independently create confusion.
Care Extends Beyond the Individual
Medication management isn't always something people handle alone.
Sometimes parents need to help their children follow a treatment routine.
Sometimes adult children want to support aging parents who manage several medications every day.
And sometimes a loved one simply wants the reassurance of knowing that someone is there to help.
That's why I built caregiver supervision into Dosly.
Through a connected supervision experience, trusted family members can follow medication routines and help provide support without needing to be physically present.
The goal isn't to take independence away from someone.
It's to make everyday care more collaborative, reassuring, and human.
A Small App Supported by Serious Infrastructure
Behind Dosly's friendly interface is an infrastructure that users will hopefully never need to think about.
I built Dosly the way much larger, well-funded apps are built: with dedicated systems that each do one job well, instead of a single fragile piece of software trying to do everything at once. That separation is what keeps notifications flowing, your data in sync, and the app responsive, even as more people rely on it every day.
All of this is maintained as an independent project, by one person. It's not the kind of investment most small apps make, but for me it matters because medication reminders deserve more engineering attention than a typical notification feature.
Every decision, from how your data moves between your devices to how reminders are scheduled, is shaped by one question:
How can I make this experience more dependable for the people who rely on it?
Designed Around the Apple Experience
The latest version of Dosly brings the experience closer to the way people already use their iPhones.
With Siri integration, iOS widgets, interactive Lock Screen notifications, and support for Critical Alerts, Dosly aims to make medication management less intrusive and more accessible throughout the day.
Users can see relevant information at a glance, interact with reminders without repeatedly navigating through the app, and personalize how they receive important alerts.
The interface has also been redesigned to feel approachable, calm, and easy to understand.
Technology can be sophisticated behind the scenes while remaining beautifully simple on the surface.
That's exactly what I'm trying to achieve.
Built Independently, for People Everywhere
Today, Dosly supports 16 languages, reflecting my ambition to make the experience useful beyond the country where it was created.
I'm continuing to improve the application, expand its capabilities, and listen to the needs of people managing medications for themselves or someone they love.
Dosly is still an independent project, developed by one person.
But the motivation behind it has never changed.
It began because I wanted to help someone I love feel safer and more confident in her daily routine.
And if Dosly can bring even a little more peace of mind to other people and families around the world, then every hour spent designing, coding, testing, and improving it will have been worth it.
